O'DONNELL,Irene Margaret Hill O’Donnell passed away peacefully in her sleep in the early hours of November 30, 2023. Irene was born in Strong, PA. on March 12, 1935 to Irene Mary Hill and John Hill. Growing up in the coal mining region of Pennsylvania, Irene had one sister (Mary Ellen) and 4 cousins who were like siblings all being raised together (Anna, Mary Lou, Bernard and James). Irene was an adventure seeker which led her to moving from PA to Detroit, Michigan after graduating from Mount Carmel High School in 1952. Irene worked for Alexander and Alexander Insurance Company starting at the young age of 17 years, and then later on at Great West Life Insurance Company as a claims auditor in the famous Renaissance Center in downtown Detroit. It was in this bustling city that Irene met her match in the young Irishman Michael O’Donnell. They married 65 years ago on a hot summer day July 5, 1958. Irene shared a life full of hard work, travel adventures, lakeside living in Indiana and beachside lounging in Florida with her husband Michael. Irene was ever present and always engaged in her daughters’ (Maureen and Megan) lives. An avid quilter, Irene loved making quilting creations for all. Irene volunteered at the hospital and made pillow cases each year for ill children through the local senior center. Irene was generous with her time, her efforts and always wanted to give and do for those who didn’t have as much as she did. Irene enjoyed coffee, crafts, Reese's Peanut Butter Cups, watching cash cab on the game show network and long chats with good friends. She soaked in time with anyone who came to visit her. And most of all, Irene loved her grandchildren Dane and Griffin. She relished in their accomplishments big and small and was able to be there for baseball games, school events and high school graduations. Her presence in their lives was constant and consistent making beautiful memories with them. Irene lived a full, loving life for 88 years and never took a day of that for granted. Irene is survived by her husband (Michael) of 65 years, her daughters Maureen (John) Cargill and Megan (Wendy Deppe) O’Donnell and her sweet grandchildren Dane Cargill and Griffin Cargill. Visitation will be 3pm Friday, December 8th, until the 5:30pm Funeral Service at Wujek-Calcaterra & Sons. 36900 Schoenherr Rd. at Metro Parkway (16 Mile).
