Graciano Figueras Singson

Graciano Francisco Figueras Singson passed away on August 15, 2025 with family by his side. He was born in Manila, Philippines, on October 2, 1938, to Ernesto Nolasco Singson Sr. and Aurora Figueras Singson. He attended Mapúa Institute of Technology High School and graduated from The University of Santo Tomas Faculty of Medicine and Surgery where he met fellow medical student Maria Vida Dedal Villegas, who would become the love of his life. After graduation in 1962, Graciano immigrated to the United States for training at Saint Clare’s Hospital in New York City and St. Raphael’s Hospital in New Haven, Connecticut. Vida joined him in New Haven and they married at St. Brendan’s Church. After moving to Michigan, Graciano had a long, fulfilling career in obstetrics and gynecology, starting at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit and South Macomb Hospital in Warren. Medicine was his vocation and a source of immense joy. He considered it a blessing and a privilege to help bring new life into the world, particularly as family was paramount in his own life. He particularly enjoyed training and mentoring younger physicians. He retired in 2012 affiliated with St. John’s Hospital and for years afterwards, was pleased to run into former patients and children whom he had delivered. Graciano was a devoted husband, a sweet and fun father, and proud grandfather whose carpentry, gardening, and home repair skills--and sheer inventiveness--shaped the family’s cozy home in Warren for more than four decades. Just as Vida, who had trained as a pathologist, supported his career, Graciano took delight in nurturing the various interests of his family. He engaged the family in numerous sports and physical activities, including family bike rides, tennis, and regular long walks, as well as Detroit Tigers and Detroit Express games with his sons. He took up running in his 40s and joined his sons in numerous local races. He cultivated a love for opera and the classical piano music that Vida played and encouraged her endless hobbies with sincere enthusiasm. He was supportive and curious about his daughter’s travels. He marveled at the academic and athletic talents of his grandchildren. His daughter’s and sons’ lives and careers were nourished by his emphasis on education, hard work, perseverance, and a healthy lifestyle. His children felt his love for them throughout their lives until his last days. Above all, Graciano was the spiritual model for his family, demonstrating unwavering faith in God’s will and great mercy. In their later years, he and Vida attended daily Mass at either St. Faustina Catholic Church (formerly St. Edmund’s) in Warren, St. Michael Catholic Church in Sterling Heights, or St. Therese of Lisieux Catholic Church in Shelby Township. Graciano was preceded in death by his mother Aurora, father Ernesto Sr., stepmother Socorro Pichay Singson, sister Felicisima Singson Polo, brother Ernesto Figueras Singson Jr., brother Cresencio Figueras Singson, and his beloved wife and best friend of nearly 54 years, Vida. He is survived by his four children Karen (and Eugene Gloria) of Greencastle, Ind., Renato (and Clarissa) of Hoffman Estates, Ill., Ricardo of Royal Oak, Mich., and Steven (and Erica) of Shelby Township, Mich.; and six grandchildren, Estella, Chloe, Charlize, Alexandria, Luca, and Milo. There will be a memorial Mass at St. Michael Catholic Church Saturday, October 18, with instate 8:30 a.m. until time of Mass at 9:30 a.m. The private inurnment will take place at Resurrection Cemetery.
