George William Kiriazis

GEORGE W. KIRIAZIS, 95, fell asleep in the Lord on January 4, 2026, with his family by his side. He was born March 13, 1930, in Weirton, West Virginia to William and Mary Nicholas Kiriazis. His family moved to Warren, Ohio when he was 14 years old. Before graduating from Warren G. Harding High School at 17, he enrolled in the Navy reserves in 1947. On January 30, 1948, he enlisted in the US Navy as a submariner and served our country for eight years. He served during the Korean War from 6/25/50 to 7/27/53. His beloved wife, Thareni Zervas Kiriazis, came to Detroit from Rhodes, Greece in 1947. They met each other while standing up in the same wedding in 1952 and married one year later in 1953. They enjoyed 63 beautiful years together until her death in 2016. George returned from service and to a new home in Detroit for the birth of his son, Steve, in July 1954 and was honorably discharged that November. George graduated from Wayne State University in 1958 and worked as a Graphic Designer. He went on to own and operate Neotype Inc., a typesetting company from 1969 to 1984. During the next 10 years, George taught at Macomb Community College and Warren Woods Tower High School. George and Irene were lifetime members of the Assumption Greek Orthodox Church in St. Clair Shores. George served on the Parish Council from 1969 and resigned in 1991 to establish a new church library and was appointed Director of the Religious Education Department of Assumption Church. George was proud to serve as Council President for two terms. He was both a Sunday School supervisor and teacher for many years. He served on the Nursery School Committee and on the Greek School Committee. George loved his church and served in many activities, including chanting during Holy Week and helping with the completion of the beauty of our church iconography. He was also the editor of our monthly Epistle for nine years. George loved to read, work on crossword puzzles and listening to music. George is preceded by his loving and devoted wife Thareni Zervas Kiriazis. Beloved father of Steve (Andriana) Kiriazis and Maria (Spyro) Vasilakis. Proud Papou to Claudia Kiriazis, Yianni Kiriazis, Maria (Paul) Dosch, Matthew Vasilakis, and Elena Vasilakis. Papou George's loving great-grandsons, Michael and Stavros Dosch. Brother to William (Mary) Kiriazis and Uncle to many nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by his parents William and Mary Kiriazis. Brothers, Michael (Eileen), Samuel (Christina), James (Isabel), sister-in-law Aspasia (Nickolaos) Garkinos. Instate Friday, January 9, 2026 at 9am until time of funeral service at 10:30am at Assumption Greek Orthodox Church, 21800 Marter Rd, St Clair Shores, MI 48080. George will be laid to rest with his beloved wife at Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly, Michigan. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donation to the Assumption Greek Orthodox Church, 21800 Marter Rd, St Clair Shores, MI 48080. May his memory be eternal.
