Frances E. Shafer

Frances E. Shafer (nee: Tocco) July 30, 1937 - March 26, 2025. Age 87. Frances was welcomed into Heaven on March 26, 2025. She was reunited with her husband of 50 years, Steve John Shafer, as well as her eldest son, Steve Jr. She is also now with her parents, Vincent and Rose, that she has not seen since she was 26 years old, as well as 8 of her 11 siblings and many of their spouses. Her surviving siblings are Eleanor Tocco, Monsignor Anthony Tocco, and James Tocco. She was incredibly proud of all of her siblings, but especially enjoyed masses performed by Msgr Tocco and piano concerts played by James. Fran also loved her siblings by marriage and is survived by Roady (Joe) Tocco, Betty Jo (Bill) Tocco, and Joseph Shafer. She is survived by her children Jennifer (Michael) Yacoub, Michael, and Andrew (Michelle), and was a proud Nana to Hannah (Chris) Huber, and Hailey Yacoub. Frances was also an adored Grandma to Devon, Cheyenne, Auston, Wyatt, Carlee, Camryn, Aiden, Cecilia, and Great Grandma to Everleigh, and she was excited to be a Gigi to Hailey (Levi Orlando) baby expected in September. Frances proudly worked as a nurse for nearly 40 years. Her passion for nursing started as a civilian nurse on an Army base in California and then moved to working with Veterans when back in Michigan. Later she worked in home healthcare, as this allowed her time for her busy family as well as her beloved career. She often spoke about her time as a supervisor for her 40+ nurse aids, whom she loved as much as they loved her. Fran had an incredible zest for life and love for God. She was a woman of principle and religion, willing to offer moral support, medical advice, life advice, and was sympathetic and helpful in any situation. She loved to travel to Port Austin, Michigan in the summers, while snowbirding in Florida for over 20 years. Her latest hobbies were playing cards, knitting, crocheting, and playing bingo while in Florida. In Michigan, she loved holiday cooking and sharing her traditional Sicilian recipes with her children and grandchildren. She loved her technology and gadgets, and Amazon was her best friend that showed up weekly. She loved listening to Elvis radio and classical music and movies, and always had a Diet Vernors by her side. She will be greatly missed by all that cherished her for 87 years. In addition to her own children, she adored her Shafer and Tocco nieces and nephews and she loved watching them grow up to have families of their own. While the Tocco side grew to more than 50 (plus spouses), she did her best to keep up with each one and maintain a special bond. Visitation Thursday, April 10th, 3pm – 8pm with a 7pm Prayer Service and Sharing of Memories at Wujek - Calcaterra & Sons Inc., (Shelby) 54880 Van Dyke Ave. Funeral Friday, April 11th, Instate from 10:30am until 11am Mass at the Stone Chapel at St. Hugo of the Hills, 2215 Opdyke Rd. Bloomfield Hills. Luncheon to follow at Heathers Club of Bloomfield 900 Upper Scottsboro Way, Bloomfield Hills, MI 48304. Interment, Great Lakes National Cemetery.
