Roderick Duane Sowders
March 13, 1969 - February 1, 2022
SOWDERS, Roderick Duane "Rod" February 1, 2022. Age 52. Beloved husband of Wendy (nee Weber). Loving father of Alexa. Dearest brother of Brad and Kevin. Cherished son of Gary (Debra) Sowders and Ann (the late Tom) Sexton. Rod is also survived by several step-siblings and many loving aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews. Rod, of Harrison Township, Michigan, was born in Indianapolis, Indiana, where he lived until 1990, when he moved to Las Vegas, Nevada. He found his love for the game of golf there and managed outside service staff at various courses including American Golf Corporation, Spanish Trail Country Club and Desert Inn Golf Club. Rod moved to Michigan’s Metro Detroit area in 2001. For a brief time in Michigan he played golf at an amateur level, where he enjoyed participating in Michigan Publinx and many other events. He also was a manager of a sales organization for SendOutCards. The majority of time since moving to Michigan, Rod was an Assistant Golf Professional at courses including Shenandoah Country Club, The Orchards Golf Club, Lochmoor Club and Forest Lake Country Club. Most recently, he called The Wyndgate Country Club his golf home. Rod was also a well-respected Member of the Michigan PGA. Over and above his love for playing golf, Rod’s true passion was teaching the skills and fundamentals of the game to all ages. He had a keen eye for the technical aspect of the swing, a good sense for each student’s ability and the patience to put it all together into valuable and effective lessons. It was not uncommon for him to spend hours each day watching golf videos and reading to learn new, or review old, teaching techniques to share with his students or to adjust his own game. Rod was grateful to work in a field that he truly enjoyed. Outside of his commitment to golf, Rod’s true love was spending time with his wife and daughter. Together they enjoyed travelling, fishing, cooking, listening to music, watching movies, and, of course, playing golf. Rod put his faith in God in all things. He cherished all of his friends and family, and the times he spent with them. Rod had a special flare for storytelling and the ability to talk with anyone in his path. Rod’s carefree style, warm personality and inviting smile made him a joy to be around, before, during and after a round of golf. He will be missed by many dear friends.
