Robert Joseph Filar

Robert Joseph Filar, or Bob, as he was affectionately called by his loved ones, aged 94, passed away on Monday afternoon, March 9th, in Port Huron, Michigan. Bob was a man committed and devoted in His love for his Savior and his family. His faith was foundational and together with his wife, Connie, built a family to love and serve God above all else, pray daily and serve others as they walked out their faith. His last words to his wife were “I love you and I love God.” Born June 16, 1931, in Detroit, Michigan, Bob was the son of Andrew and Sabina (Siracki) Filar. He was the 3rd child born of 13 brothers and sisters: the late Dolores (John) , Edward, the late Stanley, Charles, the late Thomas, Daniel, Ronald, Gerald, the late David, John, Joanne, and Mary Ann. Bob enlisted in the Army in 1951 to serve during the Korea Conflict. He was sent to Hawaii for basic training and selected to be part of the Honor Guard serving in Germany where he was promoted to Sergeant. Bob was honorably discharged in 1953. The day after he arrived home Bob met the love of his life, Constance (DiGiovanni) at the Vanity Ballroom where their love story began! They were married in 1955 and their love story endured for 70 years. Bob joined the Detroit Police Department in 1953 as a patrolman and later served in the Youth Bureau. He was promoted to Detective Sergeant in 1971 and served as a Court Officer. He went to Wayne State and graduated in 1973 with an Associate Degree in Criminal Justice and Investigation. He retired from the Detroit Police Department in 1991 after 38 years of service with commendations and honors. In 1991 they moved from Detroit to Fort Gratiot and continued to build a legacy of love and memories that will last their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren a lifetime. Their pride and joy is the family they built together. Proud and adored father of Susan (Craig) Meyer, Brian (Laura) Filar, and Mary (Steve Schultz) Demetsenare. Cherished grandfather of Christina (late Todd), Steven (Michelle), Benjamin (Angela), Shannon (Carl), Rachel (late Steve), Caitlin (Nick), Robert, and great-grandfather of Sarah, Emily, Caden, Isabella, Declan, Blake, and Linden. Visitation Sunday 3-8pm with a 7pm Rosary at Wujek - Calcaterra & Sons Inc., (Shelby) 54880 Van Dyke at 25 Mile Rd. Instate Monday 9:30 am until time of the 10 am Mass at St. Kieran Church 53600 Mound Rd. (btw. 24 & 25 Mile Rds.) Interment Great Lakes National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to St Jude Children's Research Hospital. A luncheon will immediately follow the funeral at Shelby Banquet Center at 50265 Van Dyke, Shelby Township, MI.
