Paul Ferrari

"Paolino “Paul” Ferrari was born on December 21, 1945, in Sora, Italy, to Luigi and Loreta Ferrari. The youngest of four sons, Paul experienced tremendous loss early in life, losing his mother when he was just 10 years old and his father two years later. Those difficult beginnings helped shape the resilience, independence, resourcefulness, and devotion to family that remained with him throughout his life. At the age of 14, Paul immigrated to the United States with his brother Antonio (Tony) and settled in the Detroit area. His other brothers were Felice (Fil) and Giuseppe (Joe). The brothers shared a strong loyalty to one another. When one of them was in need, the others were there. Paul served in the United States Army during the Vietnam era. Trained as a cook at Fort Knox, Kentucky, he served nearly two years on active duty, including more than a year overseas, and attained the rank of Specialist Four. He was honorably discharged in 1969 and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal and the Sharpshooter Badge. After his military service, Paul began working at Ford Motor Company’s axle plant in Sterling Heights alongside his brother Tony. His other brothers also worked for Ford in the Utica area. He became involved with the labor union and served in several union positions. Paul spent 38 years with Ford before retiring. Paul met Franca at a market in Windsor, Ontario, and they married in 1970. After their marriage, they moved into the other half of Tony’s duplex in Washington Township. Their daughter, Lorena, was born there in 1971. About a year later, Paul and Franca bought their first home in Utica, where their son, Gianni, was born in 1972, just 51 weeks after Lorena. During those early years, they met the DeMarco family, who became far more than friends. The two families remained close for decades, sharing a bond much like family. The family later moved to Romeo, Michigan, where they lived next door to Paul’s brother Fil and his family. There was always a vegetable garden, farm animals, and what felt like a small orchard. Paul had an extraordinary eye for anything growing in the wild. While living in Romeo, he could spot asparagus growing along the roadside before anyone else could see it. Several years later, the family moved to Sterling Heights. Paul was happiest when he could be outdoors. He loved searching for wild mushrooms, working in the garden, tending his flowers, and simply being surrounded by nature. Paul later became a United States citizen, an important milestone in the life he had built after coming to America as a young teenager. Paul purchased a house in Beverly Hills, Florida, near his brothers Fil and Tony, who also had homes there. Paul traveled between Michigan and Florida before eventually making Florida his full-time home, where he enjoyed playing bocce, hosting parties, volunteering at a church food pantry, and discovering an unexpected love of dancing. In retirement, Paul began to travel more. He returned to Italy twice to visit the country of his birth and remained deeply connected to his Italian heritage throughout his life. He continued speaking the dialect of his hometown in the Frosinone region and was a member of the Ciociaro Club in Windsor. One of Paul’s most treasured trips came later in life when he traveled west with his son Gianni and his grandson Antonio to visit several national parks. Antonio was about eight years old at the time. Paul later said it was the best trip he had ever taken. His relationship with Antonio was especially dear to him. Antonio lovingly called his grandfather “Tata,” a name that came from an Italian children’s song Paul used to sing to him. It became a name unique to their relationship and one that the family will always associate with Paul. Paul had a servant’s heart. If a family member, friend, or neighbor needed help, Paul was ready to pitch in. He was happiest when he could be useful—cooking a meal, fixing a car, repairing something around the house, helping with a project, or figuring out how to make something work again. He was always tinkering with something. He was an excellent cook and loved bringing people together around the table. Pasta and seafood were favorites. Pasta, however, held a special place in his heart; he could eat it every day. Franca remembered that he could be genuinely disappointed when a family meal did not include pasta. Paul also loved to laugh. He was a natural joker who enjoyed teasing people, including unsuspecting cashiers while shopping. His kindness was quiet and practical as well. He visited people in nursing homes and encouraged his children to do the same because he saw firsthand how lonely people could become when they had few visitors. He noticed people who needed companionship, encouragement, food, or a helping hand, and he tried to provide it. Paul loved animals throughout his life. Whether surrounded by farm animals in Romeo or spending time with the family dogs in later years, he always enjoyed their company. He was also famously frugal. He would repair things rather than replace them and find another use for something others might throw away. To Paul, there was almost always a way to fix something, reuse something, or do the job yourself. When his health began to decline, Gianni brought him back to Michigan, where Paul lived with Gianni and his wife, Nayeli. In the final chapter of his life, Paul was once again close to the family he had spent so many years helping and caring for. Paul’s life took him from Sora, Italy, to Detroit, Washington Township, Utica, Romeo, Sterling Heights, Florida, and places across the country and beyond. Through every chapter, the things that mattered most remained remarkably consistent: family, hard work, good food, laughter, the outdoors, helping others, and making the most of what he had. Those who knew Paul will remember his jokes, his cooking, his gardens, his generosity, and the countless practical ways he showed people that he cared. His was a life not defined by grand gestures, but by thousands of everyday acts of service, humor, hard work, and love." Visitation Sunday October 4th 3-8pm with a 6pm Rosary service.
