Kathleen Marie Abraham

Kathleen "Katy" Abraham, age 64 of Clarkston Michigan passed away peacefully at home with her family by her side on October 4th 2016. Katy was born on January 29th, 1952 in Detroit Michigan to parents Louis and Mary (Dunn) Koenig. Katy was the sweetest and most gentle youngest sister to Kenneth Koenig (deceased) and Mary Louise (Koenig) Jackson. Katy met her true love, Samuel Abraham at the Burger Chef in St. Clair Shores in 1970. They married on August 10th, 1973 and began to build their life together in Fraser. In 43 years of marriage together they set an amazing example of a truly loving, supportive marriage of best friends. Katy and Sam supported each other in the early stages of their relationship through their personal hobbies. Sam was a dirt bike racer and went to many competitions with Katy by his side to encourage and care for him. Katy loved to play softball with Sam being there to cheer her on. As time went on, they had many more opportunities, good and bad, in which they consistently demonstrated their dedication to each other. It was their good fortune to be able to build all three of their homes together. First in Fraser, then Sterling Heights, and finally, their forever home in Clarkston. Katy enjoyed many jobs before having her children, most notably as a pharmacy technician. However, Katy dedicated the majority of her life to her family as a fulltime stay at home mother. Katy's consistent presence provided a sense of security, patience and understanding for her three daughters. Her approach to marriage taught her children what it means to be both an independent person and a supportive spouse. As a grandmother, she thrived showering her grandchildren with love that will leave a life long impact. Katy had many personal interests and points of pride. She had a lifelong love of elephants, which she passed on to her daughter Melanie. Her favorite color was purple, and she tried to get as much of it in her life as possible. Katy and Sam often joked that Katy's dream was to have a purple elephant. Katy was also very proud of her Irish heritage. She loved all things that had an Irish tradition to them. Katy taught her daughters and grandkids how to make soda bread and the traditional way to score it before baking to ensure the "fairies" could get out. Katy also loved "her" Detroit Tigers. She had a personal dream of being able to see the Tigers play in a World Series in her lifetime. Katy was able to achieve that dream in 2006 when her son-in-law Mark took her to Game 1 of the World Series at Comerica Park against the St. Louis Cardinals. Katy was also passionate about the music of Rod Stewart, Bob Seger, and Elton John. She had the good fortune to be able to see all 3 artists in concert multiple times. Katy also enjoyed traveling. Sam was able to make at least two of Katy's dream destinations a reality. In 1992 they traveled to Ireland, and in 1998 spent their 25th wedding anniversary in Hawaii. Perhaps Katy's greatest joy, other than her marriage, was her grandchildren. She would make every effort to attend any sports game or school function she could. The grandchildren all looked forward to "Grandma's chair", where they would snuggle and read stories together and "grandma's drawer", where she would stash away little surprises for them every time they came to visit, just so she could see them smile. Katy was diagnosed with MS in 1986. It was a devastating blow to the family she and Sam were building. But Katy quickly made her peace with her diagnosis and took it in stride while she continued to live her life to the fullest. The way she approached her illness was a testament to some of her greatest qualities; an immense inner strength, remarkable determination, resilience and humility. Despite whatever hardships she faced personally, she always maintained compassion and love to those around her and consistently cared for others. All those who were close to her were touched by her calm demeanor and ability to put everyone at ease. She is survived by her husband Samuel Abraham her daughters Allison (Mark) Magni, Melanie (Nishant) de Quadros, Meredith (Alex) Mendez, her grandchildren Samuel, Lillian, Ava and Alex Jr. her sister Mary Louise (Ken) Jackson. Katy was preceded in death by her parents, brother Kenneth and sister in law Mary Ann. Katy will be forever remembered as a loving wife, mother and grandmother who radiated kindness, patience and strength. Visitation will be held at Wujek-Calcaterra and Sons Funeral Home, 54880 Van Dyke at 25 Mile Road, Shelby Township Michigan 48316, Thursday October 6th 3pm-9pm and Friday October 7th 3pm-9pm. Funeral services will be held at Christ the Redeemer Church Catholic Church, located at 2700 Waldon Road, Lake Orion Michigan. Saturday October 8th at 10am.
