George William Sutter

George Sutter, beloved husband of the late Mary, passed away peacefully on October 18, 2026 at the age of 93. He spent his final days at home surrounded by family. George was born at home on the eastside of Detroit on July 13, 1933. He was the son of Leo and Agatha Sutter. He was twelfth of eighteen children born into his family. He often shared stories about growing up in such a large family. A few were bitter sweet but most were highly entertaining. When George became a young man, he was absolutely swept away by a pretty girl he saw walking down his sister’s street. He asked his sister Dorothy if she knew the girl. When his sister confirmed she knew her, George then begged his sister to make the introductions. George and Mary were married June 7, 1958 at St. Catherine of Siena Roman Catholic Church in Detroit. Their first home together was a small apartment above a pizza parlor on Mack Avenue in Detroit. Not long after that they moved to a little home on Bolam Avenue in Warren and in 1968, George moved his family again, this time to a brand new home in Sterling Height that had plenty of room for his growing family. George’s Catholic Faith was unbreakable. As a child he attended St. Catherine of Siena Roman Catholic Church and School. He’d often share, “If you was late for morning mass, you was late for school.” It was rare that George missed a Sunday Mass. In his later years, he was able to invest his time into the Msgr. John T. Gordon Council #12102 of the Knights of Columbus. He will be buried in his Fourth Degree Knight tuxedo and baldric. George started working for his parents’ curtain laundry when he was a young teen and worked there until after he was married. With the demands of a family, he changed jobs and worked for Peninsula Plating in the morning and Howard Plating in the afternoon before finally getting hired by Chrysler in 1966. George took pride in his job at Chrysler where he drove a hi-lo (forklift) moving stamped automotive sheet-metal parts from the assembly line to the racks for shipping. He enjoyed playing cards with his buddies at work where they gambled away the cookies and sweets from their lunches. George retired in 1996 after 30 years at the Chrysler Sterling Stamping Plant on VanDyke in Sterling Heights. This allowed Mary and George to travel to visit relatives throughout Michigan and in other states as well as interesting sights along the way during the summer months. When Mary retired in 2000, the trips became year round. They went everywhere their vehicle would take them including Pikes Peak. A favorite destination was Nashville where they enjoyed shows at the Grand Ol’ Oprey as well as Branson Missouri for the various theaters and shows found there. George will be fondly remembered by many for his genuine kindness, his eagerness to lend a hand, and his sense of humor. He will be remembered by his children and grandchildren for his desire to put an “S” on anything that he felt would look better adorned with an “S”. He will also be remembered for his drawings. He never let a lack of talent stop him from sketching faces and other doodles on random items. George is survived by his children Roberta LaPonse, Leon (Maria) Sutter, Donald Sutter, Teresa (Daniel) Loman and siblings William (Phoebe) Sutter, Marcella (Patrick) McCabe, Daniel (Ardith) Sutter and sister-in-law, Ginny Sutter. George was adored by his grandchildren Melissa, Jeremy, Jessica, Christine, Sydney, TJ, Nathan, and Zachary as well as 8 great grandchildren and 83 nieces and nephews. George was preceded in death by his parents Leo and Agatha Sutter and siblings Betty (john) Koscielniak , Leon Sutter, Bob (Marion) Sutter, Rosemary Hakkinen, Dorothy (Paul) Duffy, John, Jim (Rita) Sutter, Eugene (Lois) Sutter , Rita Groesbeck, Jerry (Barbara) Sutter, Thomas Sutter, Mary Louzen, Ralph Sutter and Ronald Sutter. Visitation for George will be held Thursday, October 22, 3 pm to 8 pm (Rosary Service 7-8) at Wujek Calcaterra & Sons Inc, 36900 Schoenherr Rd, Sterling Heights, MI 48312. He will lie in state on Friday, October 23, at 10:30 am until the time of his funeral mass at 11 am at St. Ephrem Catholic Church, 38900 Dodge Park Rd, Sterling Heights, MI 48312. George will be laid to rest at White Chapel Memorial Cemetery, Garden of Prayer, 621 W Long Lake Rd, Troy, MI 48098 following the mass. Memorial donations in George’s name can be made to the Msgr. John T. Gordon Council #12102 of the Knights of Columbus, St Ephrem Parish, 38900 Dodge Park Rd, Sterling Heights, MI 48312
