Gary Allen Clements

December 31, 1942 - February 10, 2022

CLEMENTS, Gary. February 10, 2022. Age 79. Loving father of Andrew Franklin Clements, Catherine Ann Clements and beloved grandkitty London. Dear nephew of Camilla Ann Hanners. Beloved cousin of Arnold Whisenant, Jr., Margie (Benny) Johns, Joy (Wilton) McNiel, Colleen Weaver, Steve (Kay) Abbott, Brenda (Milton) Chamblee, Lillian (George) Boedgiff, Barbara Thompson, Dale (Phil) Dadonna and Michael Hanners. Preceded in death by his parents, Clyde Jackson Clements and Esther Pearl (Knox) Upchurch. Gary served his country proudly with the United States Navy during the Cuban Missile Crisis (for which he earned a commendation from President John F. Kennedy) and Vietnam conflict. Gary was a pioneer in bringing Koei-Kan Karate-Do to the United States. While stationed in Japan, Gary studied under Sensei Onishi Eizo and earned a 3rd Degree black belt. Gary had the rare opportunity to compete in the First International All-Japan Koei-Kan Karate-Do Championships in Tokyo, Japan in 1964, in which he took 3rd place. Very sociable, Gary made friends at every family diner he patronized and always had a stool waiting for him at the counter. After his time in the service Gary had a lifelong career as computer programmer and analyst for Chrysler. Gary will always be remembered as a generous and kind-hearted man, but most importantly for his strong faith in God. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends he met along the way. Visitation will take place Wednesday, February 16, 2022 from 3-8pm at Wujek-Calcaterra & Sons, Inc., 36900 Schoenherr at Metro Parkway (16 Mile). Funeral service Thursday, February 17, 2022 at 1:00 pm at Royal Oak Church of Christ, 115 S. Campbell Rd., Royal Oak. Burial at Great Lakes National Cemetery. Gary was a giver and he gave sacrificially. Donations to the needs of the family would honor his memory, as would donations to Royal Oak Church of Christ, or Gary's favorite TV ministry, D. James Kennedy Ministries. Share memories with the family at their "On-Line Guestbook" at WujekCalcaterra.com
