Fr. Dennis J. Nowinski

NOWINSKI, Fr. Dennis J. Age 77. March 1, 2024. Loving son of the late Walter and the late Irene. Dear brother of David (Meg Coughlin) and Nancy (Jeffrey) Eliasz. Beloved uncle of Walter (Anne VanderMey) Nowinski, Heather (Joshua) Holdsworth, Ashley (Justin) Shaffer, Jeffrey (Megan Cranston) Eliasz and Anna Nowinski. Cherished great-uncle of Olivia Holdsworth, Elijah Holdsworth, Charlotte Shaffer, Eleanor Shaffer and the late Noah Thomas Shaffer. Fr. Nowinski, 77, was born in Hamtramck and was ordained Feb. 17, 1973. He attended St. Mary’s College in Orchard Lake and St. John Provincial Seminary. His home parish was St. Angela, Roseville. Fr. Nowinski served as associate pastor of Our Lady Queen of Apostles Parish, Hamtramck (1973-76), and then as associate pastor of St. Clement Parish, Warren (1976-79), before being named pastor of St. Christine Parish, Detroit, from 1979-80. He also served as associate pastor of Our Lady of Good Counsel Parish, Detroit, from 1980-84. In 1984, Fr. Nowinski was appointed to serve as pastor of St. Francis D’Assisi Parish, Detroit, until 1989. He then served as pastor of All Saints Parish, Memphis, until 2001. For a brief period in 2001, Fr. Nowinski also served at Our Lady Star of the Sea Parish, Grosse Pointe Woods. Prior to ordination Fr. Nowinski was a deacon at St. Henry, Lincoln Park. Fr. Nowinski also enjoyed helping out at Holy Innocents - St. Barnabas and St. Angela, parishes in Roseville. Fr. Nowinski served one term as vicar of the Old Southwest Vicariate from 1985-87, and spent many years as a hospital chaplain at DMC-Harper Hospital, Detroit; St. John Oakland Hospital, Madison Heights; St. John Macomb Hospital, Warren; and Botsford General Hospital in Farmington Hills until he was granted senior status in 2017. Fr. Nowinski served as a chaplain at Martha T Berry Medical Care Facility in Mount Clemens, at the American House East and West in Roseville also Knights of Columbus Father Kramer Council #2835 in Centerline. Fr. Dennis served the Lord and the Roman Catholic church with great joy in his heart. He enjoyed family gatherings and it was his honor to support his friends and family through numerous baptisms, weddings, funerals and even sponsoring the confirmations of family members. Fr. Dennis loved to root for the Lions, Tigers and enjoyed bowling. He also loved the many dogs in his life, especially Sheba, Freeway and Bam Bam. Fr. Dennis Nowinski will be greatly missed by the loving family, friends, and all that had the pleasure of meeting him. Visitation Thursday from 3-9pm with a 7pm Rosary at Wujek-Calcaterra & Sons, Inc. 36900 Schoenherr at Metro Parkway (16 Mile). Instate Friday, March 8, 2024 10am until the time of the 11am Mass at Holy Innocents St. Barnabas Church, 16359 Frazho Rd, Roseville. Interment Resurrection Cemetery.
