Florence Rachel Mourad

Florence Rachel Mourad, 88, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 1, 2026 in her home surrounded by her children and grandchildren in Grosse Pointe. Florence was born on October 24,1937 in Detroit, Michigan, the fifth of six children of the late Philip and Adele Shammas. She graduated from Denby High School and worked in her father’s wholesale grocer company, S & G in Detroit, founded in 1924. She married Raymond N. Mourad on January 24,1961, at St. George Orthodox Church in Detroit, Michigan. Florence dedicated her life to her family. She was a loving and supportive wife to her husband Ray in all his endeavors. In fact, she spotted Raymond at the age of ten and announced to her mother, “I’m going to marry that boy” and followed through with her promise. Ray and Flo went on to have three children, Diane, Michelle and Norman. She continued to work for her family business in sales, as she won everyone over with her beaming smile and bright spirit. Throughout her life, Florence was a faithful servant. Charity always began in the home as she was very caring and loving to everyone who needed her. She was a gracious hostess and continually entertained family and friends, where you could find her home cooked mediterranean cuisine. She loved her 3:00pm coffee and always allowed herself dessert! She also enjoyed playing bridge with her friends and volunteered at the St. John’s Hospital gift shop. Mothering was her passion. She couldn’t tell you she loved you enough and always stood in the doorway to wave and bless you goodbye. She was lovely, refined, kind and beautiful inside and out. Her faith guided her as she always felt grateful and humbled for her abundant blessings. Her eleven grandchildren and two great grands were her joy. And her dear friend Phil Graves, in these later years, brought her happiness. Florence is survived by her children, Diane (Michael) Leoni, Michelle (Michael) Giorgio, and Norman (MaryAnn) Mourad. Her sister Violet Mahfood, her brother Robert Shammas and brother Richard Shammas (Kathy). Her grandchildren, Angela Giorgio, Frank (Allie) Giorgio, Trina (Daniel) Baldwin, Dominic Leoni, John (Julia) Leoni, Olivia Leoni, Nicholas Leoni, Rachel Mourad, Christopher Mourad, Matthew Mourad, Alissa Mourad, and great grandsons Frank and Michael Giorgio. She was preceded in death by her parents Philip and Adele Shammas, husband Raymond Mourad, her sister Janet Lakis (George), her brother George Shammas (Mary), sister in law Elizabeth Shammas, her niece Nicole Shammas, brother in law Adeeb Mahfood, brother in law Robert Mourad, her nephew Thomas Mourad and her great nephew Michael Simone. A Funeral service will be held on Tuesday, July 21, 2026 at St. George Orthodox Church 2160 East Maple Road,Troy, Michigan 48083. Viewing at 9:30am. Funeral at 10:30am.
