Dennis Michael Cichon

Dennis "Pigeon" Cichon, of Richmond, passed away Monday, Feb. 12, with his children by his side. Dennis was born Dec. 19, 1941, in Detroit, where he grew up and graduated from Notre Dame High School in 1960. He married his high school sweetheart, Mary Ellen Trombley, on Jan. 26, 1963, and they were together for 38 years before she passed. In high school, Dennis ran track and played hockey, and he continued to coach and play hockey into his 40s. Dennis and Mary raised their family in St. Clair Shores and Sterling Heights. Their longtime Shores home was in a tight-knit neighborhood with dozens of kids running around, and neighbors who enjoyed socializing with their friends. Dennis worked as a lineman with the former Michigan Bell/Ameritech until his retirement in May 1999. After his retirement, golf became one of his passions, especially on Tuesdays with friends at Cracklewood Golf Club in Macomb. His circle of golfing partners increased after he spent time in cardiac rehab, where his fellow patients became a golf and social group. He was a member of the Huron Point Beer and Vegetable Association, a social group that competed to grow the largest vegetable, something he looked forward to every season. The group fit into his enjoyment for telling stories, of which he had many. His family and friends will miss hearing his stories, and his laugh, something that all of his children inherited. Dennis and Mary’s three children survive him: Denise (Todd) Byrne of Shelby Twp.; Lynn (Scott) Hathaway of Romeo; and Joseph (Anne) of Rochester Hills. He is also survived by several grandchildren, including Benjamin, Adam and Daniel Byrne; Sean Hathaway; Zachary and Jacob Cichon; and Evan (Samantha) Nicholson, Lauren (Joshua) Nicholson, and Julia Nicholson. Dennis reconnected with longtime childhood and family friend Maureen (Coughlin) Combs and her family. They shared the past 22 years together. He was preceded in death by his parents, Leonard and Ableen (Berger) Cichon; and his sister, Sandra (Cichon) Masson.
