FERENC, Thomas, J., May 12, 2025 Age 67. Tom “The Moose” Ferenc was born in Detroit with his older twin brother (Ty) on July 28th 1957. Tom’s older sister Nancy rounding out the family. Tom lived in Detroit attending Our Lady Queen of Apostles Catholic grade school in Hamtramck. Tom went on to graduate 3rd in his class, from De La Salle Collegiate High school, located in Detroit Michigan. Tom held the DLS Shot Put record with a toss of 56’0” for over 50 years a record that still stands! At 6’5” weighing some 245lbs he became the most dominant shot putter in the school’s history! More amazing is that Tom never threw the shot put until his sophomore year at DLS. Coach Brian Murphy, who was a NCAA decathlon varsity member at the University of Wisconsin taught Tom the finer points of throwing! It is the 2nd oldest DLS track and field record in the schools 99 year history! He continued to dominate his sport throwing the 12 pound steel ball during the 1975 campaign winning all but one of the meets. In the state meet he threw a record setting 56’0” to win the Class B state meet championship. Tom was also the NCAA junior champ (under the age of 18) for the state of Michigan finishing 2nd in the NCAA national junior championship. Tom continued his education at University of Notre Dame graduating with an accounting degree while earning 4 varsity letters for the shot put at University of Notre Dame. He was a big fan of the fighting Irish Football. Tom passed the CPA exam on his first try and went to work at Alexander Grant. After a few years at the firm, Tom started a sports trading card business. After 20 years in that business he closed the business down and went to work for H&R Block doing over 600 tax returns in any given tax season. He was involved in the Knights of Columbus and a member of SS Cyril Methodius Slovak Catholic Church, in Sterling Heights Michigan. Visitation Wednesday 2-9pm at Wujek-Calcaterra & Sons 36900 Schoenherr at Metro Parkway (16 Mile Rd). Funeral Thursday instate 11am at Ss Cyril & Methodius Slovak Catholic Church 41233 Ryan Rd until time of Mss 12 noon. Interment Resurrecton Cemetery.
