Gaston Robert Bond

Gaston Robert Bonds was born December 4, 1944 in Detroit, Michigan, to the union of Gaston Robert Bond and Alwiler Brown. In his formative years, he was raised on Detroit’s Eastside. He was referred to by his middle name, Robert, but his family affectionately called him “Red”. “Red” was born with an adventurist spirit! When he came up with a goal, he was relentless in pursuing it. Music was a huge part of Robert life. He was in a middle school band, he trained as a baritone singer and was a member of a gospel choir, who released an album. Later, he would own a record store on Jefferson Avenue in Detroit. He remained a life-long music lover with an encyclopedia knowledge of America music. Robert attended Eastern High School, where he met Mary Ann Highgate, his future wife. Out of this union, came two sons and a daughter, Robert (Brian), Martin and Tiffany. He served the U. S. Air Force from 1964-1968. After his honorable discharge, worked for Michigan Bell (AT&T) as an Auditor. He later worked for The U.S. Postal Service, as a Stationary Engineer. He worked at the U.S.P.S. Michigan Hub at Detroit Metro Airport. That “adventure spirit” kicked in, when he moved his family to Riverside, California for a year, around 1979. He bought his children horses and exposed them to a new lifestyle, where they lived in a country-valley ranch house. He also played baseball there. He had a host of hobbies, including fishing, camping, hunting, boating, billiards and card playing. He was also an avid coin collector. Later in life, he became a “Master” gardener, and had a harvest every year to give to his children and friends. The Lord called Gaston home to His heavenly gates on April 7, 2025, after a battle with Lung Cancer. He was preceded in death by his brothers: the late Melvin and Collie Bonds and the late Samuel Woodside. He leaves to cherish his memory: his sons Robert (Sharon), Martin (Musette) Bonds; his daughter Tiffany Bonds; grandchildren; Pharoh (Dominque) Johnson, Summer (Azentem) Nkwinkeh and Vijay Bonds; great-grandchildren, Noah and Gianna; sisters, Florence Cobb, Diane Long, Valerie (Steven) Byrd; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends. Instate will be held Tuesday from 11am until the time of the 12pm Funeral Service at Wyoming Avenue Church of Christ, 20131 Wyoming Ave, Detroit, MI 48221. Interment at Great Lakes National Cemetery.
