Virginia Marie McAvoy 'Ginger'

Virginia “Ginger” McAvoy loved angels throughout her life. On July 28, 2023 she officially earned her wings and passed away peacefully in her sleep. She was a beloved wife and mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. Ginger will be forever known for her zest for life, positive outlook and unwavering and uncompromising love of family and friends. The many who loved her knew 1) you should never call before her 11 a.m. wake up time, 2) she never met a rooster knick knack she didn’t need, and 3) she gave of herself tirelessly whenever and wherever someone needed her. Virginia was proud of her Kansas City, MO roots, born on September 18, 1932 to Conrad and Fern Alexander. She graduated from St. Teresa of Avila College, majoring in Sociology. While there, she met her husband, Paul, at a mixer—an event captured by the local paper under the headline “Boy Meets Girl.” She and Paul began their family in Kansas City, moved to the Cleveland, Ohio area and settled in Sterling Heights in 1969. Along the way, she gathered friends of all ages through her warmth, easy manner and ability to connect with others regardless of their age. To have met her was to be a friend forever. Professionally, she was a retired special education paraprofessional. She is now reunited with her husband Paul, who passed away in 1995. Undoubtedly, they are bowling again on Saturday nights with friends, and he is bringing her a thermos of coffee each morning. Ginger is survived by her children Jayne (Mike) Kelly, Paul McAvoy, Dan McAvoy, Gerry (Mary Beth) McAvoy and Tim (Annette) McAvoy. She is also survived and adored by her grandchildren: Chris(Jen), Erika, John(Emily), Tony, Alysse(Chris) and Martin. She is also loved by nine great grandchildren: Vera, Grady, Jude, Claire, Mae, Jane, Lucy, Sam and Ellen. Ginger will also be missed by her surviving brother-in-law, Louis McAvoy, and many special nieces and nephews. She was pre-deceased by her sister, Marguerite, and brother-in-law John McCarthy. Virginia impacted so many people throughout her life. Her family knew that to see her they must schedule up two weeks in advance, given her busy social calendar. Above all, she loved her family and friends and found any occasion to make the ordinary extraordinary, including birthdays, holidays and milestones. God bless the beautiful Virginia McAvoy. Instate Friday at 9 am until the time of 9:30 am Mass at St. Rene Goupil Catholic Parish, 35955 Ryan Rd, Sterling Heights. Interment at Resurrection Cemetery.
