Theresa M. Carmicino

Venice-Theresa Carmicino, born in Trapani, Sicily, long-time resident of the Detroit Metro area and current resident of Venice, Florida, died Saturday the 7th of January in Venice. Born in 1946 in the small coastal town of Trapani, Sicily. Theresa and her parents and brothers immigrated to Detroit, Michigan when she was nine years old aboard the S.S. Constitution. This significant transition sculpted who she was and paved the way for many outstanding accomplishments. Among these accomplishments was her attainment of a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Wayne State University in 1969. She began working for the State of Michigan in Child Services and then as a Welfare Fraud Investigator until retirement. Alongside her career in social work, she was a loving and devoted wife of 47 years, mother to four exceptional daughters in whom she instilled a great sense of compassion, and an adoring, enthusiastic grandmother ("Grams"); she thrived socially among coworkers and friends; she was an advocate of human, animal and environmental rights. Theresa had a magnetic, witty personality. Her smile was contagious and she never failed to share it. She emanated warmth and love from her core, her disposition was persistently friendly and helpful. To her family, she was the peacemaker, counselor, and consoler; to all, she was inspiringly caring, thoughtful, open-minded, and capable. A lover of the arts, her passions included attending plays and operas, reading, reciting Shakespeare quotes (sometimes misquoting!), and singing to the oldies (oftentimes off-key!). She took pride in her delicious cooking and delighted in entertaining guests. During her golden years, she could be considered a jetsetter, adventuring around the world. But her favorite thing was simple: drinking coffee in the morning with her husband, gazing upon the peaceful scenery surrounding their Venice home. Even during her last two years while living with cancer, Theresa's courageous spirit and love for life never waned. She wanted nothing more than for her loved ones to be happy. Theresa will be dearly missed by her husband, Giacomo Carmicino, daughters Tina (Michael Lofthouse) Griffith, Cristina (Jeffrey Culp) Carmicino, Anne (David) Dreifke, Paula (Nicholas) Amaranth and grandchildren Gabriella, Adam, Anthony, and Jack. Theresa was preceded in death by her parents Nicolo and Maria Manuguerra and brothers Peter (Charlyn) Manuguerra and Joseph (Michele) Manuguerra. Also preceding her in death were her pets Tito 1, Tito 2, Frisky, and Lucky and granddog Logan; survived by grandpets, Brody, Della, George, Luna, Kiki, Milo, Caroline, Maxwell, Shelby and Philip. Theresa was beloved by many cousins, nieces, nephews, friends and coworkers. We love you to the moon and back!
