Pallickal Marykutty Thomas

Marykutty Thomas was born on March 21st 1940 to the late Mr. Pallickel Korakunju and the late Mrs. Kunnirickal Maryamma. She was the fourth of seven children. From a very young age, Marykutty Thomas showed great maturity and displayed an uncanny ability to meet and overcome life’s challenges. After losing her father at the young age of 13, she expertly assumed her role as the head of the household, making sure to care for both her younger and older siblings alike. At the same time, she stayed dedicated to her own educational pursuits. After successfully graduating from high school, she continued to study Hindi literature. Her ultimate goal was to become a teacher; however, the journey would not be easy for once again life tested her duty to her home. Marykutty was forced to take a break from pursuing academics in order to care for her bedridden grandmother. Ever the steadfast woman, this did not discourage her but rather gave her great pride; for as many of you know, she attributed all the personal successes in her life, as well as all the achievements in her schooling, to the blessings of her beloved grandmother. At the age of 19, she met and married an engineer by the name of Cherian Thomas. After her marriage, she returned to her studies and achieved her dream of becoming a teacher while simultaneously having her first son, Suresh. Her journey was also blessed with the birth of her 2 other sons, Sathish and Sunish. She started her work as a teacher at the M.S. High School in Ranny. Through her time as a teacher, she was instrumental in shaping the educational curriculum in multiple subjects and excelled in a multitude of educational roles. She eventually ended her career at the age of 55 after attaining the prestigious role as the Headmistress of St. Thomas U.P. School. Aside from being an educational leader, she served her community in other ways and continued to show her aptitude as a trailblazer. While leading a fruitful career, Marykutty also became the first woman to hold a position as the Director of the Community Credit Union. In fact, she was the only female on the board at that time. In addition to her professional pursuits, she was also interested in many hobbies. She participated in various sports as well as the arts. She was an exceptional swimmer, placing 1st in all three swimming styles in the Kerala State finals. She additionally won multiple awards in the fields of literature, poetry, and even fancy-dress competitions. Even later in her life, she continued to stay active; serving the church by leading the Women’s Forum and other organizations. After living such an exemplary life as a community leader, devoted wife, loving mother, and role model to her grandchildren, Marykutty finally went on to her eternal home with the Lord in the afternoon of June 4th, 2020. She will be remembered for her strength, her dedication to the betterment of her community, and her love for all the people that enriched her life. We are blessed to have had such a capable, dedicated matriarch and we await the day when we may see her again. Marykutty leaves behind her children: Suresh Thomas & Susan (Suja-Vishakamthara, Kumarakom), Sathish Thomas & Bini (Kochumole- Kallelimannil, Ranny) and Sunish Thomas & Gini (Sheena- Kanjirathinkal, Ranny) and grandchildren: Silona, Sherwin & Veena, Feba and Febin. ***Please be advised that in observance of the governmental order from the State of Michigan we will be limiting funeral gatherings to 10 people at any one time. When in attendance we kindly ask, for the safety and well-being of the families we serve, that everyone wear a face covering and practice social distancing***
