Maria Trigilio

Maria Trigilio, age 97, passed away on October 23, 2023 surrounded by her family. She was born in 1926 in Catania, Sicily. Maria was the beloved wife of the late Dominic Trigilio (1986), the loving mother of Maria (James) Militello, Salvatore (Joan) Trigilio, Kathleen (John) Chisholm, and Johanna Trigilio and caring grandmother to Nicole (David) Greenway, Michael Trigilio, Alexander (Breanna) Chisholm and Patricia Chisholm. She was preceded in death by her brothers Sebastiano and Guiseppe, as well as her sisters Domenica and Lucia. Maria grew up in Catania, Ancona and Augusta, Sicily. In 1951, she met and married Dominic when he visited his family in Augusta. They honeymooned in Italy before Dominic returned to Detroit and the following year, she bravely traveled by herself aboard the SS Constitution to join him in America. Maria studied English and loved to read mysteries and biographies. She became a Naturalized Citizen in 1963 and maintained a great interest in politics and world events her entire life. Maria and Dominic raised their children in Detroit and, in 1976, moved to a new home in Clinton Township. Although she never learned to drive, Maria was able to go places using the SMART bus and her network of friends. Until recently, she lived an independent life at home. Maria was a member the San Domenico di Augusta Club. For many years, she enjoyed monthly meetings and dinners with her Augustanesi friends. Maria also had many other life-long friends who kept in touch and included her as part of their family. Maria's faith played an important role in her life, and she found solace and strength as a devout Catholic. She worshipped at St. David's in Detroit, and both San Francisco and St. Michael’s in Clinton Township. Later when she was unable to attend Mass, she watched the Mass and Rosary daily on television. She was devoted to Blessed Solanus Casey. For those who knew and loved her, Maria’s memory will forever live on in their hearts. Visitation will be on Monday, November 6th, 4-8 pm with Rosary at 7 pm at the Wujek-Calcaterra & Sons Funeral Home, 36900 Schoenherr Rd at Metro Parkway (16 Mile) in Sterling Heights. Funeral Mass will be Tuesday, November 7th, Instate 9:00 am at St Michael Catholic Church, 40501 Hayes Rd, Sterling Heights, until Mass at 9:30 am. Interment will immediately follow at Resurrection Cemetery, 18201 Clinton River Rd, Clinton Twp. In lieu of Flowers, Maria wished that memorial contributions would be made to the Solanus Casey Center, 1780 Mt Elliott St, Detroit, MI 48207, 313-579-2100, www.solanuscasey.org.
