Lydia Marie Coppola

Lydia Marie Coppola, a loving wife, devoted mother and grandmother, and lifelong Detroit Tigers fan, passed away peacefully on June 9, 2025. She was 88 years old. Lydia was the beloved wife of the late Sebastian “Nick” Coppola. She was the proud and loving mother of Roseanne Coppola, Christina (Neil Hanna) Coppola-Hanna, and Elena (Tim LeQuier) Coppola. She was a cherished grandmother to Neil, Mia, Katherine, Nathaniel, and Zachary. Lydia was the dear sister of the late Aggie Valente and Jeanette Cervi, and daughter of the late Adelina and Alfonso DeLuca. Born and raised in Detroit, Lydia graduated from Cooley High School and was proud to work at Ford Motor Company as an administrative assistant. She traveled all over the U.S. and Canada with the Ford Women’s Club. She even played on the company’s women’s softball team until a broken finger sidelined her typing—and her season. In 1966, she married her sweetheart, Nick, and together they built a life in a brand-new home in Sterling Heights, where they raised their three daughters. Lydia was a dedicated mom who never missed a softball game, tennis match, band concert, or awards ceremony—always cheering (and sometimes coaching/yelling) from the sidelines. Lydia had a deep love for family, sports—especially baseball—and entertainment. She loved a good (and sometimes bad) television drama. She was an avid viewer of General Hospital and a passionate supporter of live theatre. Her faith was equally important to her; once her daughters were old enough, she taught catechism at St. Anne’s Catholic Church in Warren for 26 years. Her 7th grade students loved her visual aids and her blend of enthusiasm for both religion and sports. In her later years, Lydia enjoyed tennis with her lady friends and Sunday golf outings with Nick. But her greatest joy came from her five grandchildren, whom she doted on from the day each was born. She delighted in taking them to the park, teaching them how to catch and throw, playing endless rounds of Go Fish, treating them to Erma’s Custard, and creating special games and traditions just for them. Lydia’s unwavering love, joyful spirit, and fierce loyalty to her family—and her Tigers—will be deeply missed.
