Cross, Leonard W. Age 77 March 27, 2024. Leonard W. Cross, 77, died on March 27, 2024, from an aggressive form of cancer. He was surrounded by his family. Leonard’s life and legacy of love will be celebrated at a memorial visitation on Thursday, April 18, 2024, from 5 p.m. – 9 p.m., and a memorial prayer service will be held on Friday, April 19, 2024, at 11 a.m. Both will take place at Wujek-Calcaterra & Sons, Inc., 36900 Schoenherr Road at Metro Parkway (16 Mile Road). Leonard will always be remembered for his quick smile and wit and for the gratitude with which he lived each day. He was born in Philadelphia and grew up in Detroit and Harper Woods along with his three brothers and his sister. He spent three years in the U.S. Army and was a paratrooper and radio operator in the 101st Airborne Division, serving with commendation in Vietnam. He married the love and light of his life, Leona Standaert, in 1967, and they built a beautiful family and life together, living in Warren and Sterling Heights. Leonard worked for the Michigan Consolidated Gas Company/DTE for 40 years as a distribution field maintenance worker, draftsman, and field supervisor. He enjoyed golf, travel, puzzles, and volunteering. He had a love for nature, and his red maple tree had a special place in his heart. He spent many days working in his garden, cultivating a habitat for birds. He was happiest helping others, doing home improvements, playing games, sharing stories, and simply spending time with his grandchildren and the many people he loved and cared for unconditionally. Leonard is survived by his devoted wife, Leona, and daughters MargaretAnn (James Van Fleteren) Cross and Deanna (Patrick) Scanlon; grandchildren Sabina (Zack) Kittaka, Clare Van Fleteren, Henry Van Fleteren, and Maureen Scanlon; his siblings Dan (the late Lois) Moonan, Don (Diane) Cross, Peggy Ann (the late Kurt) Smith, and the late Fred (Gert) Cross; his brothers-in-law Paul Standaert and Fred (the late Gloria) Standaert; and many nieces, nephews, and adopted family members. He was predeceased by his loving mother and father, Margaret and Henry Kosmala. Donations preferred to the University of Michigan Health Rogel Cancer Center’s Fund for Discovery.
