Doreen Ann Winnega

Doreen A. Winnega, 86, Harrison Township Michigan, passed away on July 24, 2024. Beloved wife of Curtis Winnega for 64 years. Together they had three sons. Doreen was preceded in death by her oldest son Kirk (Mary Ann) and is survived by her sons Kelton (Donna) and Erik (Julie). Doreen had eight grandchildren: Bryan, Jacob, Angell, Christopher, Kevin, Erik, Brie and Gabrial. She had four great grandchildren. Doreen was born in Detroit, Michigan to Jake and Dora Andary. She was preceded in death by her brother Gary and is survived by her sister-in-law Mimi and niece Shawn. Doreen earned her bachelor’s degree from Northern Michigan University and her master’s degree in mathematics from the University of Michigan. Most of her career was spent as a teacher for Fraser Public Schools, from which she retired after a 40+ year tenure. In retirement, Doreen spent much of her time volunteering for the Kiwanis Club, fundraising for the unhoused school-aged children in Macomb County, delivering bread and baked goods to local shelters, coordinating food baskets, and bell ringing for the Salvation Army. Her greatest joy was spending time with her grandchildren, taking them to her charity events and teaching them how to give back, which they have all taken with them into adulthood. She often declared "grandma days" for her grandchildren, taking them on surprise trips to new playgrounds, treating them to ice cream, hosting sleepovers, and bringing immeasurable joy to their childhoods. Doreen’s mother was the oldest of nine children, which meant there were countless Doran cousins with whom Doreen grew up. She continued her friendship with her cousins on a regular basis, getting together with them, singing old Irish tunes, and dancing. As a loving and cherished wife, mother, sister, grandmother, aunt, cousin, and friend, Doreen enriched the lives of every person she met. She will be deeply missed and fondly remembered for her beautiful soul, unparalleled kindness, and commitment to singing every song at church on Sundays. Doreen will be lying in state on Saturday, August 3rd at 10:00 am until the time of the funeral service at 11:00 am at St. Hubert's Catholic Church, 38775 Prentiss St., Harrison Twp., Michigan.
