Daniel Lee Pfaff

PFAFF, Daniel L. age 63, Aug. 1, 2014. Beloved husband and treasured father and grandfather, Daniel L. Pfaff passed away at home and surrounded by his loved ones at dawn on Friday, August 1. He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Karen Kierpaul, and his children Brendan (Luci), Teresa (Joel Urbanowicz), Sara (Jason Rogers), Paul (Jess Purcell), and Robert. Dan was the proud grandfather of Ethan, Gabriel, and Cameron. He was also the dear son of Delia and the late Norman Pfaff, and brother to Dennis (Jan), Douglas (Helen), David (Sue), Donald (Judy) and Debra (Kevin) Fagan. He was a rare man: compassionate, whimsical yet steadfast, a servant of the servants. His like will not be seen again. Though Dan is sorely missed, his legacy of selfless kindness will endure and fare forward through the many lives he touched. This spring Dan celebrated his 38th anniversary as a manager at the Department of Human Services with the State of Michigan, where he was a tireless advocate for the poor and abandoned. He has served on the HSCB Interagency Communication Workgroup, the Metropolitan Detroit Refugee Task Force, the Macomb Regional Interagency Coordinating Committee, the United Way Housing Workgroup, and for six years was chairperson of the Accessing Mainstream Resources Subcommittee for the Macomb Homeless Coalition. His committee, together with the whole Coalition, planned and implemented the Community Connection Day in January 2007, which won an award from the National Association of Counties. He was also co-coordinator of The Warming Center for the homeless at St. Edmund/St. Faustina Church for the past 9 years. He received the Community Spirit Award from Disability Network of Oakland and Macomb in August, 2010. He was awarded the Barbara Bauman Homeless Advocate Award by the Macomb Homeless Coalition in November, 2010. He created a resource website, http://macombresources.info for human services professionals and caring individuals in Macomb County. In lieu of flowers, donations in Dan's name to the Macomb County Warming Center (http://www.warmingcenter.org/) or The Missionary Servants of the Most Holy Trinity (http://www.trinitymissions.org/) would be greatly appreciated. Visitation will be held Sunday 2-9 p.m. at Wujek-Calcaterra & Sons, Inc., 54880 Van Dyke (at 25 Mile Road), Shelby Township. A rosary will be read at 7 p.m. Dan will lie in state Monday 10 a.m. at St. Faustina Church, 14025 E. 12 Mile Road (west of Schoenherr) until Mass, which will be held at 10:30 a.m. Interment will follow at St. Denis Cemetery in Lexington, Michigan.
