Angela Scolaro

Angela Scolaro Angela Scolaro was born Angelina Mangiapane in Detroit, Michigan on December 2, 1922 to Isidoro and Caterina Mangiapane. As an only child for 10 years, she welcomed the birth of her sister Josephine, followed two years later by her brother Nicolo. In the early 1930s, her parents became members of the Church of Jesus Christ, allowing Angela to happily become part of a large Church family. Shortly afterward, her father introduced one of his co-workers, Pietro Scolaro, to the Church. He and his family, including son Tony, embraced the Restored Gospel as well, and Angela and Tony's friendship at church would eventually grow into a lifelong partnership. Angela was baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ, Detroit Branch #1 by Brother Joseph Lovalvo on November 27, 1938 and was confirmed by Brother Anthony Ruzzi. She graduated from Detroit's East Commerce High School in 1940. Her appreciation of music throughout her school years led her, later in life, to make music lessons for her children a priority. After high school, Angela worked as a bookkeeper with the Department of the Army at Fort Wayne. She became engaged to Tony Scolaro in December 1941, shortly after the attack on Pearl Harbor. After four long years waiting for his return from War, Angela and Tony were married on February 16, 1946. Their 55 years together would revolve around their five children, extended family, and service to the Lord and His Church. A hostess to many, she was always busy, often singing and whistling while she worked. Angela led and served others: As PTA president, Brownie Troop leader, Room Mother, while laboring in the Church holding various offices in the Ladies' Uplift Circle. She was ordained a deaconess on April 13, 1969 by Brother Concetto Alessandro. Angela was an avid reader, lover of word games and puzzles, always interested in current events. She was a great support to her husband in his profession in banking, in his ministry and missionary work of the Church, often enjoying the opportunity to travel with him. In her later years, as age and affliction came upon her, Angela maintained--with dignity--her trust in the Lord and her concern for others, passing peacefully to her eternal home on April 15, 2013. She is survived by her five children and their spouses: Peter (Marilyn), Kathleen Perkins (Larry), Timothy (Renée), Anthony (Linda), and Rosanne Champine (Larry); eleven grandchildren and their spouses: Christopher (Alissa) Scolaro, Julie (Brett) Gibson, Kimberly Perkins (Tom) Komjathy, Andrew (Natalie) Perkins, Jennifer and Bryan Champine, and Jonathan, Benjamin, Jared, Caterina, and Cristina Scolaro; seven great-grandchildren: Gracie and Calvin Gibson, Aaron, Mitchell, and Reid Scolaro, and Allison and Michael Komjathy; as well as her brother, Nick (Barbara) Mangiapane. Angela will be missed by a host of relatives and friends, and by the Brothers and Sisters of The Church of Jesus Christ. Her legacy is a testimony of the peace and joy that is had through loving the Lord, and living His Gospel.
